New Year, New Adventures!

Happy Holidays from Girls That Hike! 2017 is right around the corner and you know what that means… New Year’s Resolutions! It’s the time to make a promise and commitment to yourself to do an act of self-improvement or something that will make you happy. This is the time where you sit down and think about what it is you want to change or improve. Whether it’s work, relationship, or health related, this is a new start! My New Year’s Resolution is to get out and explore more! 2016 is the year I began adventuring, the year I found peace with myself and nature, the year that I found a new passion, and the year I conquered things I never thought I’d be able to do. 2016 has definitely changed my way of living and I am much happier because of it! But 2017 will be my year, I plan to explore new places, push myself to become a better hiker, and get out of my comfort zone! So are you ready for the new year?

Right now, you may be thinking about what it is that you want to do, thinking about what you’d like to improve or what new things you’d like to take on… Are you someone who wants to start exploring this awesome world? Someone who wants to see whats out there and take awesome pictures to share with your friends and family? If you are someone who wants to do some adventurous things but have no idea where to start… I want you to know that you’re not the only one. Before I began hiking, I remember going through my Instagram feed and seeing the stunning pictures everyone was taking as they explored and I wanted to take beautiful pictures like that but had no idea where to start. I felt lost, but with that I’ve learned SOOO much! So here are some things that help me out!

I can’t even tell you how many hours and hours I’ve spent doing research on a new hiking trail, on hiking tips, or even reading about other people’s experiences! I find everyone’s experience very helpful, it gives me a good idea on what to expect and it makes me feel confident. If you have a question, there’s a high chance someone has already asked it, so look it up! If you want to start an activity but don’t know where to start, there are so many great resources that will help you! You have the power of the Internet, so use it!

If you know someone that does the activity you want to take on and have questions, why not ask them how they got started? Ask them how they did it, about the things they wish they would’ve known before starting the activity, or even about a past experience. I love when people ask for my advice, I know I’m no hiking expert, I know I have so much to learn. But.. because I recently began hiking, I know how it’s like starting off, so don’t be afraid to ask!

Exploring or trying something new can be very exciting and you just want to go out and give it a try, but make sure you do things safely. Do your research, make sure you are prepared, it can be very dangerous without the right information or gear so PLEEAAASSSEEE get informed! Take all of those “What If’s” into consideration and be safe!

If you are someone who is afraid to try something new on your own, find someone to join you! Find someone who is willing to embark on the adventure with you! Someone to share all those great moments, and someone to carpool with! This way, you’ll feel safe, have each others back, and save a little on gas! You’ll be able to motivate one another and keep each other accountable!

I plan to google A LOT this upcoming year! I want to go on my first backpacking trip, and try camping since I’ve yet to go on a camping trip! So I encourage you to go out and try something new, even if it’s small! It’s a brand new start so make the most of it! And most importantly, DON’T GIVE UP! Constantly remind yourself why it was your New Year’s Resolution, remind yourself what you want to get out of it, and that you are strong enough to stick with it!
